Cold air intake
I personally believe this will be the case most of the time if people are actually honest about throwing their money away!
Had a very similar experience with a Jeep Wrangler.
I've found no evidence that fuel mileage was enhanced or any power gains were realized following the installation of the K&N system. It is annoyingly noisy and I consider the purchase price a colossal waste of money. I would reinstall the stock induction system buy I have well over $200.00 tied up in it and I couldn't give it away.
If you enjoy the noise then a CAI system is right up your alley but there is no other reason to buy and install one.
I do like the louder engine intake sound, some don't. When you actually look at the dyno charts for a performance difference its only really noticeable "SOMEWHAT" in the higher not very used RPM range.
At least it was on my 03 5.4, maybe they got the gains down lower for yours?
They're not overly beneficial unless you're coupling them with other mods, including but not limited to exhaust, tune, etc.
I put one on a '98 Grand Prix GTP, coupled with a LOT of other work, and it didn't really improve mileage but it did help the engine breathe better when I put the 3.4" supercharger pulley on it. I didn't have the shroud that went around the element on this.
I put one on a '99 GMC Jimmy and saw maybe .5 mpg improvement, but it also helped keep the engine cooler so I didn't melt as many distributor caps until I removed the catalytic converter (long story). This one came with a shroud that sealed around the tube and top/bottom, forcing it to draw air from behind the headlight and through the fender instead of the engine compartment, so it WAS drawing cooler air.
I had one that I put on my '03 F350 6.0, then swapped to my '04 after bulletproofing. I DID see a slight gain in mpg on the '03, of around 1-2 mpg, that went away when I swapped back to the factory intake. Again, this one had a shroud that sealed top/bottom and around the intake tube, so it was drawing air from behind the headlight and through the fender, so cooler air. Now, once it was on the '04 that was tuned and had an exhaust, it also had a much different sound than on the '03, as its ability to move air into the engine was better utilized. I can't say what mileage improvements the intake gave me, but the difference between before the work and after was 4-5 mpg. On a dually.
So like I said, if it's a good one, it may help some, but not a lot, unless you're putting other work with it.
