I purchased the AAW classic upgrade harness (510260) for my '65 with a 360 CID. I plan to upgrade the alternator (need 1-wire setup). AAW recommends a Ford Gen III type alternator as a replacement. I'm completely new to this hobby (no mechanic experience, but learning is why partially why I purchased my '65), so would appreciate any advice/recommendations on what to consider before buying an alternator. I'm currently considering https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pwm-8-47141.
Unless you are installing a monster sound system, and/or lots of other high powered peripherals, 150 amps is way overkill. I know nothing about the quality of those PowerMaster units, someone will come long and opine.
I did the same rewire. I used a similar alt. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWM-8-47101
I had called Powermaster, and they talked me through the selection - really good tech support
Didn't dive into all the differences, but noted that your selection is 150 amps, and the one I have as 100 amps. If you're running major lights, stereo, electric winch and electric radiator fans, you would consider the larger one, otherwise I think 100 is a good, overkill choice for our trucks. The larger amp unit won't create more drag on your system - only produces what is needed. However it's performance curve may not be optimum for you, if it's set-up to produce X amps at X RPM due to its high output capability in a way that does not match your driving - I'm sure it will work, but that's one for more research if you care - call Powermaster
Here's a calculator for required amps https://www.qualitypowerauto.com/pag...Calculator.php
My engine and drive train is already pretty highly modified, so I don't over-consider original equipment, however you might want to look for a more original style offering as well
+1 Can't go wrong with Powermaster at all. I found that 75 amp is plenty enough as I'm running LEDs front and rear, no stereo (the exhaust makes the sound I want to hear) and no silly MSD box on a street truck.
That's fair- to each, his own. I have a factory pink wire, Ignitor II and a Flame Thrower coil. Plenty hot enough for a warmed up street engine and 75 amp alternator supports it easily. I just wanted to keep it simple, reliable and serviceable with factory wiring harnesses so troubleshooting was straight forward with Ford factory diagrams.
