Overdrive dropping out
2001 F250 210,000 miles. Recently my overdrive would drop out downshifting to the next lower gear. It would not hook up overdrive until the next drive, then same thing. After about 10 miles, overdrive was non existent. After researching online, I decided to check the wires coming out of the shift lever for chaffing. Sure enough, there were two spots. Repairing them with electrical tape, the problem disappeared. Overdrive is back to normal. I had already had in my head that I better get ready to fork out too much money for a rebuild. Thanks to the interweb, I found a zero cost fix. Just passing along this info. Apparently, if the wire makes ground, it tells the transmission to drop back out of overdrive, same as pushing the button, but will no longer shift back up. I know you guys probably already know this fix, but for us newbs, try this for this issue first. Just remove the plastic steering column covers, find the wires coming out of the shift lever, and look for bare spots.
