I received a mailing a couple of days ago wanting me to sign up for Ford Protect extended warranty. I have about 2 years and three months left on the warranty on my truck. If I sign up now I will have dual warranties until the truck warranty runs out. I think I know that it would be cheaper now than in two years. Ford is offering $200 off if I sign up now, which is a pittance off what it will cost. The dealership told me to wait until just before my warranty ran out. I figure they will make more money then than now.
I am seeking advice on when to get the extended warranty. I drive a 2021 F-450 King Ranch if that helps. Thanks in advance.
Those directly sold warranties from Ford are not a good deal.
If you really want a Ford warranty, go to one of the companies selling them independently, they discount them more, like zieglerwarranty.com they sell multiple manufacturer warranties, they are part of a dealer group.
The plan price goes up $100 after the first 1yr/12k miles. After that, besides any overall plan pricing increases, the price does not change if purchased within 3yr/36k miles. Definitely shop around, Flood Ford is a good source. If you search ESP on here you will find more threads and suggested sources for these warranties.
You want to get it before the factory warranty expires. The disadvantage to waiting is there likely will be price increases between now and then (note price does increase regardless after 1 yr/12k miles).
If you plan on keeping your truck beyond the factory warranty and you plan on buying the Ford ESP, there are advantages to buying now other than just avoiding price increases.
Rental car for warranty repairs that take more than a day. Your dealer may offer you a loaner for warranty work but they are not required to. If you are on the road away from home it might be beneficial.
First day rental coverage provides a rental car on the first day for a nominal premium increase.
For a nominal fee, you can add key fob replacement and lockout coverage and LED lighting coverage.
There is also trip interruption coverage.
All the above start immediately. They are not covered under the factory warranty.
Recommend you purchase from one of the discount dealers that have been mentioned on this forum.
Should you trade or sell your truck before the ESP expires, it can be transferred to the new owner if they pay the $75 fee (can add value to your resale value). Also, if you never made a claim using your ESP (got mine online from Flood Ford), you can get a partial refund of its initial cost. My dealer did not want to bother with the ESP when I traded, so I got a partial refund for the ESP on my 2017 KR and had it applied to the new ESP for my 2022 KR ... all online at Flood Ford.
It’s a great question. I have the same truck - 22MY - and have been pondering the same thing. One big advantage to waiting, I think, is that after three years I’ll have a good handle on my annual mileage. It will allow me to choose the plan( # of years) that maximizes my coverage.
For your insight and information. I’ll stay away from this warranty and second party warranties. I will contact the dealerships you mentioned. Again thank you for your replies.

Ummmm, the ESP’s sold by Ford directly are not a good deal compared to the online sellers but you implied that the ones sold by Ford are not a real Ford backed ESP.
You have to purchase the Ford Protect/ESP prior to the expiration of your 3yr/36k base warranty. If you purchase within the first year/12k since delivery, you can save $100. I wanted to wait, keeping my money in the bank. My 3yr/36k warranty expires 11/1/21 so I decided to investigate the past few days. As the forum suggested, I looked at Flood, Zeigler, Lombard, etc. Flood was cheapest and VERY easy to deal with. I average ~10/11k a year and wanted the longest term possible. 8 years is max term Ford Protect offers. So based on my mileage, I went for a 8yr/100k ESP. Prices were as follows:
.
ExtraCare 8yr/100k $100 deductible
zeiglerfordesp.com - $2,050
lombardfordwarrantys.com - $1,912 (this price included the $192 'discount code' (tweet))
floodfordesp.com - $1,750
I was able to use my 6400 FordPass points to save $32 off of the $1,750 (every little bit helps)
