SUDDEN ENGINE KNOCK?!?!!!? 1990 7.3 IDI

Help!!

Was driving down the road in second gear in my 90 7.3 IDI f350 one day and all the sudden this loud knocking noise started, I immediately suspected something was hitting the fan as it was based off of RPMS...... Pulled over and popped the hood, nothing near the fan, fully clear.... The noise went up and down with RPM's, when in idle it was more faint but clearly there.... Also sounded like it was at the rear of the engine when looking in from the hood, like it was underneath the turbo way in the back. Also every now and then there was another sound, like there was water dripping and going onto something hot and almost a hiss sound or a ting.....

Decided to get her home. Took a video for sound reference. In the video we went into neutral was coasting down a hill, revved the engine so you can hear it pick up with rpms and then hear the drop.... then all the sudden its gone....

Checked to see if a glow plug or injector had dropped into the engine... nothing. BUT injector on the driver side in the rear was covered in a sludge..........
Took off the valve covers, looks fine....
Drained the oil... normal..

Anyone got any tips of what to do next?

Hmmm.

Hard to tell from a video, but it might be an injector. you could try the ATF filter thing, and see if that helps.

If that doesn't fix it and there isn't anything obvious under the VC's, then you probably have something internal that is going to be a bigger problem. Might be a good idea to pull your oil filter and see if you got metal in the filter.

With the engine idling you could try loosening one injector line at a time, until the engine stumbles. With each injector you should be able to hear the difference in running, if you loosen one and there’s no change in idle that’s the bad one. When you say gone, you mean the noise just goes away on its own? Nothing loose or badly wore under the valve covers?
