Rough idle and engine noise

Ok,this problem may be a little vague, but here goes. I just got back from towing my trailer about 1200 miles. The majority of the miles were at 65-70 mph. I did not have any issues until I got home and in slower traffic noticed a ticking sound coming from the engine. The engine is also running rougher than usual. I have tried to locate the ticking sound and I believe it may be coming from the exhaust around the vicintity of the headers, etc. Sorry that this is so vague, but does anyone have any insight into what may be going on? this truck is driving me crazy!

Crack each injector lose one at a time and see if the ticking quits or you find one that doesnt make it any rougher.

You can also use a screwdriver as a stethoscope to help pin point it.

sounds like it could be an exaust leak. How many mile are on the truck, IP and injectors. What engine is in it 7.3/6.9 turo/NA?

The truck has 115,000 and has a turbo. I feel as though it is an injector or exhaust leak. Thanks for the response. I will check in the morning.

Look for black soot on the exhaust manifold to block area and the down pipe connection..

I dont see soot around any of the exhaust except for the area near the turbo. Also, this morning the truck started rough and smoked for about 3 minutes,White smoke. then it eventually smoothed out and stopped smoking. This truck continues to test my patience. It is a 7.3 with only 115,00 on it. Does this still sound like an injector issue?

I would say injector. Had some bad ones and it looked like a modified pulling truck with as much white smoke it had at idle. It sound like one of them is leaking down and making the timing advanced. Which will make it tick more.
Was it hard to start.

I am pretty sure its an injector. this morning I started it again and it smoked like crazy. It finally smoothed out and stopped smoking, then the ticking sound really came back. People have given me ideas on trying to find out which one is sticking but it is unclear to me. should I just change all of them. the truck only has 115,000 on it. Thanks.

The injectors can last up to 200,000 miles in some cases I would just do them all at once since they are rellatively cheap. But first i would make sure it is the problem. Take a 5/8 wrench and crack the injection lines one at a time and see if the sound goes away you only have to open them enough to let fule come out not take them all the way off. It is definatly possible that you have an injector popping at two low of presure cuasing the timming to be too far advanced. The best way would be to pull the injectors and pop test them if you have acces to the equipment or call a local injection shop and ask what they charge to pop a set of injectors.

White smoke is retarded timing. I'd double check the cold start advance. It sounds like it stops smoking after it warms up?
