I have noticed my steering having play and feeling loose has increased lately. I have seen where some pull the steering shaft that has the rag joint on it and installed a gap/feeler gauge in the tension part located on the shaft to eliminate play. I pulled mine and found the tension piece had broken and was not functioning at all. I looked for a possible replacement and came up with a hose clamp that was 1 3/8" and cut it to fit the the old piece since it was the same width. It made for an easy simple fix and helped remove steering play probably 90%. Here is a pic of how it turned out. I used the rubber handle on my wire cutters to make the correct bend.
Looks great, but I wonder if it needs to be spring steel.
The one that broke is spring steel. It only needs spring to slide in the other shaft. I put a bigger arch on the new one and put it in with some force so it will remain with the pressure it needs to fully function. Good observation on your part.
