Question about steering knuckle.

Ok so I was looking to tighten the steering some and noticed the steering knuckle. My question is does it look right and how do I tighten it?

That's not a steering knuckle.... It's the "rag joint".

Btw, yours is bound up and the rag is distorted... the large metal piece (the nub) should go btween the notch on the steering shaft flange. That "S" or wave on the rag part should be relatively flat. I recommend replacing it.

The term "knuckle" is typically applied to the left and right steering spindles of a 4x4's axle.

That's not called A steering knuckle in your pix. that steeling shaft coupler is nick named rag joint. Its looking old but still some what good, but oil on it aides in rubber rotting.. Maybe worse areas, I can't see. Add it to your to do list of things to replace..

Thank you for correcting me I'll have to find one up at the pick n pull. Wondering if an 68 or 71/72 will fit or maybe I can fix this one with a vice?

Buy it new at any auto parts store. That is a safety part like brakes. You wouldn't go to the JY to find brake pads, would you? Think of others' safety if not your own.

Loco auto zone carry or can order a lot of hard classic vehicle stuff. But you can't beat OEM parts. Even lots of goodies on ebay under NOS ford truck parts. But always check what the shipping is as you can get screwed good if your not careful.

I just replaced the rag joint on my 67, but the steering has been swapped from a newer bump before I bought it. Rag joint was listed for 66-68 I think, but it went in.

Replaced the Rag joint the other day. It was a lot easier then I thought. once I loosed the steering column and the ring that's under the hood. and pushed the whole thing up with an extremely larger crescent wrench. Popped the lower part off and ground off the two nubs. The installation of the new rag joint was slightly confusing at first because of the one nub included with the kit. Would rather have two. I'm going to need to replace the lower coupler due to finding out the unit is slightly stripped. I know I could have it drilled out and re-tapped but i'm just going to replace the whole unit. Also found that I needed to replace the stud with one that had a hex-capped head. because of the nut holding the nub blocks the replacement of the stud.

No such thing as a lower coupler unless you have 4WD, and 4WD's do not use a rag joint.

Parts catalog pic: The steering shaft and flange (3524) is a one piece assy. The rag joint (3A525) bolts to the flange then attaches to the input shaft of the steering gearbox (3504).

1967/75 F100/250 4WD: The upper steering shaft connects to the lower steering shaft and coupler, which connects to the input shaft of the steering gearbox with a clamp and thru bolt.

its the lower steering shaft and coupler. :P you knew what I meant. But thank you for the explanation. and its not the unit but the retainer bolt that's stripped out. I know I can take it and have it tapped and a healacoil put in but i'm hoping oldfordjunky can find one.

You are scaring me with this Char. You should do this the right way rather than adapting. Steering (and brakes) are your life!

The flange is made as part of the steering shaft, all it has is 2 holes for the studs of the rag joint to poke thru. These studs use 5/16" -18 nuts.

You said you replaced the rag joint, but did you replace the entire joint or just the rubber portion that is sold by auto parts stores?

If you replaced the complete rag joint, where did you buy it? It's obsolete from Ford, no one has any NOS.

It is available from Dorman Products, which are sold by auto parts stores.
