Front end clunk when braking
01 250 7.3L 4x4 with a body level, on stock 265s
Went over a bump yesterday, and down some terrible roads. When I was going over it sounded like metal on metal clinging under the front end, it was awfully alarming. Never heard anything like that before.
later that day I put it in reverse, and it started to sound like something was grinding or catching in the wheel well. It was not the transmission I’m sure of it.
put it back in drive, and pressed on the brake and I noticed the clunk noise from what really sounds like the driver front wheel well area.
if I go from park, to drive, at speeds less than 10mph and press the brake, I hear the clunk in the wheel well area. Even at higher speeds it will clunk. It will clunk every time I press the brake pedal, same area.
no visible damages, no fluids leaking, just these noises. Read it could be ball joints. I have NOT jacked the front end up to wiggle the tire and check for play (bad ball joints). I also did the brakes not too long ago and they aren’t sticking (anymore!!). There is play in the wheel which I read can be from bad ball joints as well.
what do you guys think it is, I honestly don’t even know where to start. I’m about fed up with removing the tires, brakes, rotors, etc to search for it.
I have not inspected the front end, I have not gotten it inspected but it is on my to do list.
please help!

Perhaps a small rock or piece of debris is stuck in the braking system It has happened to me before on another vehicle because I drive off the beaten path every chance I get.
You really need to get under there and start looking around. Get the wheels off the ground and start spinning and shaking them. Look, listen and feel.

I'd Imagine that missing bolt is the clunk when braking from the other thread.
Had a bolt walk out on a rear caliper once, heard it right away, and was able to pull over in about 3 miles to see what the cause was.
That short amount of driving gouged a nasty deep groove in the wheel and was on the scary edge of going bad to worse.
address this first then get back to the hoses.

tirned out to be both bolts on the RR caliper mounting bracket were loose but the top one fell out!
10$ at the auto parts store for a pack of two and the problem is solved…
also no play in the front wheels while jacked so I’m gonna assume (for now) ball joints are good to go!
