Question 92 Explorer Speakers

I have a 92 Explorer that I have been trying to find a good system for because the factory system is shot(all the speakers are busted). Does anybody know where I can some fairly good speakers for cheap and what size is the best to fit?

You might try Crutchfield. They offer great service and no hassles. Their prices are comparable to most, but the service and freebies make the deal. I bought an Alpine CD receiver from them and a set of speaker. They included the wiring harness, needed hardware for dash installation and a printed installation guide, specific to my XLT. Their call center is about sixty miles from you in Wise, VA. Shipping is less than two days on the east coast.

Yea I would agree Crutchfield, is a good place and cheep, if you plan on installing the compents yourself thats what i would go with. But if you dont want to install them, most places wont install stuff you bought some were else they want you to buy it from them, but the up side to that is most places have specals or sometimes all the time that if you buy speekers head unit they install for free, all places are pretty comprable. Installing speaker are real ez, just pull the srews out for the door handle and get a flat head srew driver and gentley pry the door pannel, onece started you can use your finger, carfull not to brake the clips, then just remove the 4 srews holding the speaker in, and cut the stock connecter, just buy 6"x8" speaker and they drop right in, you just have to strip the wire that is in the door after you remover the connecter......Now the head unit gets a little complecated, you have to remove the old one, sometimes you need specail tools, and for the new one to fit you have to file some on the trim and drill holes...Also if you want subs, thats even more complicated, you have to wire an amp, run power directley to the battery hide the wires under the floor, if you plan on getting a complete system, subs, speakers, head unit i would deffently reconment to have it proffesionally done, if you do it wrong you could fry everything big bucks down the drain.....I would just go to a local car stereo store, i know the bigger chains always are having specails of free installs....I.E. Circuit City, Tweeter, Best Buy, even the smaller ones have specials, most stoeres prices on the equiptment is comprable, for a good system without subs just head unit and speaker, figure about 500, for subs and an amp, about another 500.....good luck

If you have never installed an aftermarket stereo, I would recommend taking it someplace and having it done. If you have done this before, or are feeling adventuresome... then try it yourself. There are a few things you need to get the job done.
1. Head unit wiring harness... this will adapt what ever head unit you buy to the factory wiring. You do not need a mounting kit as the 92 Explorer has a single DIN unit.
2. Wiring harness for the speakers. I currently run 5 1/4" components in the front and 6x8 3-ways in the rear. I had to make an adapter plate out of 1/4" plywood to fit the component speakers in the factory locations.
3. Amp bypass harness for the factory amp. Now this is the biggest pain to deal with. You have to take apart the passengers side rear panel to get at the amp, it sits above the wheel well. Once you have it pulled far enough from the wall, then you pull the wires from the amp and connect the bypass. They also make a harness so you can use a new amp in the stock location. I did not do this, I just ran new wiring from the battery and head unit. Make sure you use an inline fuse, 30 amp should be enough, on the constant feed. Run the remote and RCA's from the head unit and find a ground in the back.
