Here is the top cap removal process that I would expect the dealer to follow. It appears that removal of the upper mirror and mirror motor gives access to all the clips.

Awesome bit of info! thanks. The YouTube video that I used as a reference did not remove the upper mirror adjuster in step 9 which should give the needed access. I hope there is not a next time but I learned something today.
