1999 Ranger Speedometer issues
i tried replacing the speed sensor on the rear differential. It didn’t solve anything. I plugged in my OBD reader and found that it continues to give an accurate reading even after the speedometer drops to the 10mph mark.
Any thoughts on how to fix it.
When you say after 30-45 min it "drones down to zero", are you saying the speed-o becomes noisy ???
EDIT: I forgot to ask if there are any trouble code clues, if so, post All code Numbers as they can help focus a trouble shoot.
Did the problem come about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event ???
Seeing as how the old speed-o isn't broken, just noisy & erratic, open it up to get at the old speed-o needle bearing & try giving it a tiny bit of a instrument, or clock oil, with a needle oiler, or if you don't have any of that, try a tiny drop of fresh high quality low viscosity, non residual synthetic tranny lube. The latter applied with a home made pen oiler (syringe & needle), worked for me more than 10 years on a 85 Alliance intermittent acting out, noisy, erratic indication, speed-o needle.
You can likely salvage the old speed-o assy as a spare, or swap it back in so the mileage is correct & use the recently acquired one as a spare.
Don't toss the old speed sensor, as its ok you have a spare one of those too!!!
More thoughts for consideration.
