1991 Ranger Speedometer

I have a 91 Ranger XLT. The speedometer does all kinds of crazy things, reads way faster than the truck is actually going, occasionally stays at 45mph after stopping , and many other weird readings. Temperature is a factor. Here is why I can't figure out why. A few years ago, I replaced the transmission (A4LD). The problem persisted. Then I replaced the speedo drive on the transmission, still the same inaccuracy. As a last resort, I recently replaced the speedometer and gauge cluster (some gauges had ceased to work). Still inaccurate. The speedo is purely mechanical, no wires coming from the transmission, so I don't see how it could be related to the truck computer. I have read other posts, but the solution seems to be lubricating the speedo head, but I replaced the whole thing! Any ideas?

Your speedometer cable is shot........seen this type of thing before.

Good news is it's relatively a easy job to replace.

Thanks Old93junk, I wondered about that, but since the speedo needle did not jump around, I dismissed the possibility. I will get a new cable, and put it in as soon as my son brings the truck home from college.
