Does anyone have the ignition timing for a 1982 F150 351W?
Looking for the factory setting for initial and full timing. The Haynes manual says to just check the vehicle emissions control label in the engine compartment. But mine is long gone.
They had many different configurations that year, even for the same engine. So that is why they tell you to look at the sticker. It should be the sticker with the vacuum line diagram on it. If your engine has been modified or "desmogged" in any way, the factory number is no good anymore anyway. If I were you I would set it to 10 degrees BTDC and try it out. The higher you can set it, the more throttle response and fuel mileage you will get. Till you get to the point that it pings under load or struggles to crank over hot. Then you have to start backing it off a little bit.
This is how the new fuel injected cars run. The computer is constant bumping the timing up till it hears pinging, and then backing off. Then it starts the cycle again. That is how they automatically adjust for different grades of fuel and different ambient conditions, while keeping the power and fuel mileage the max it can be.
