E4OD Transmission, Inop.
When I first got the Ford truck, I performed a complete service (oil change, full tune-up, and transmission service). Since then, replaced any faulty parts, when needed. When the battery went dead (his mechanic put an AC Delco battery in it, dated 1978). I put an expensive Gel battery in the truck. I always use the better quality parts when replacing them. Just this past year alone, I've spent over $6,000.00 in parts, and some labor (when possible, I try to do my own labor). On the 4th of July weekend (this year), I went up north (160 miles) to visit a friend from high school I hadn't seen in over 45 years. I had the truck checked out before leaving. When I got into my friend's town, the transmission started pouring out of the transmission from the front seal. I managed to park it in my friend's driveway, for 2 months. I'm on disability, and had to save my money for the repairs. In September, had the truck towed to Visalia to a transmission shop. The mechanic rebuilt the pump, and replaced the front seal and a bushing.I also had him replace the filter. (I had shops that I had called, saying it might also be a good idea to replace the torque converter). The transmission mechanic said he felt the torque converter was fine. I drove the truck back to Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley), without any trouble. Been driving the truck for 1 month, all seemed okay. But on last Wednesday, the 6th of September 2021, I started hearing a rattling noise on my way home from Home Depot. As I pulled into the driveway to the apartment's rear parking, the transmission started disengaging. When I got into my space, it quit working completely. I had to push it in for the last 3 feet. Engine running, I tried all the gears, transmission wouldn't engage, engine idle remained the same. I checked the fluid level. It was full. The next day, I called the transmission mechanic in Visalia, and he said it's probably the torque converter. He also said, if it's not the torque converter, it would be cheaper to have a good, used transmission installed as a replacement, than have this one rebuilt. My family keeps telling me to get rid of the truck and get something else. Big problem, couldn't get enough for the truck to afford something better. And being on disability, also couldn't afford something else. Just keep saving money to repair it, and keep it. I have already replaced pretty much everything, except for the exhaust, suspension, and interior. It could also use a paint job, but if it looked better, someone might try to steal it.
No matter what the problem is, the only way to find out is to take the trans out of the truck. If it is the flex plate, it will be obvious as soon as the trans is out of the way. If it is the torque converter or transmission causing this, it will take a teardown to find the problem.
