It sounds like the rod that attatches the handle to the latch has fallen off due to a broken retainer. Pull the door panel off and there will be access holes in the door so you will be able to see it more clearly. I would take a few pics and post them here so we can see what is goin on if you don;t see it.
It's possible I haven't looked at mine to make sure. I just know how is used to be done. In any case there is most likely a retainer that has fallen off.

Been really buzy, so I haven't got a chance to dig in.
The outside latch has a hole in it..like something should attatch. I'll know better when I get the time to pull off the inside door panel.
