75MPH - Died!

Hey Guys,

06 F250 4x4 with the 6.0L and for the most part my truck has been really good no issues outside normal stuff. Last night I was coming back from Las Vegas, was on the grade (down) to the Barstow exit for the Outlets in the fast lane doing 75-80 and my truck just died. She shut off, I didn't realize I had a problem until I hit the gas and nothing forcing me to look down. Dash lights were normal like she was running but she wasn't, RPMs where at zero. Muscled her over to the inside of the freeway called AAA $200 tow later. She will crank no issues, no smoke out the pipes, no check engine lights, nothing out of the ordinary to point me in a direction if that makes sense. She was running great all weekend long so it caught me by complete surprise.

She is 100% bone stock, no upgraded FICM, Tunes, Exhaust, Intake, or anything like that. Any ideas on what would cause the truck to do this? I am thinking because she turns over fine, no smoke out the pipe, I lost a fuel pump, but I am no where near as adept at reading these trucks like some of you. Just seeing what the gang thinks? She has 150K on her.

Tim

I would start by checking fuel pressure and scanning for codes with Forscan, Russ

You should be able to hear the fuel pump run at key on. If you do, then have a helper turn the key on while you watch the fuel bowl fill up in the engine compartment. It should fill up fast so be ready to yell OFF. This would be in addition to checking your fuel pressure as said above.

Without pulling codes from the PCM we are playing a guessing game. Do you have an OBD2 dongle and an app on your phone yet? B.

It's at the DS right now but I did have an EDGE Monitor on it. The truck had no CEL light on nor did the monitor pick up a code when I checked on the side of the road.

A code does not always produce a CEL and monitors are not usually adequate for finding DTCs.
Watch this video and get a monitoring app like Forscan and a OBD wireless adapter to look for the outputs.

If the STC has not been replaced, it sounds like that could be it. When they go bad, it can be sudden. I'd go ahead and replace it it it hasn't been replaced already.. the part is not costly. Once you open up the HPOP and put your hands on the fitting, you'll know if that was the issue. If not, you'll need some data.

I'd go ahead and replace the stand pipes and dummy plugs (if they haven't ben replaced already) while its down.

That sounds exactly like what mine did when the two piece STC failed. Check to see if you lost any oil. If a blown apart STC takes out the rear cover you'll probably have a puddle underneath.

Sorry for the silence...work is crazy.

Bismic - I don't have the information for your question but when I did turn it over nothing it did made me think it was out of the normal range.

STC fittings I am going to have to pull my paperwork to see if that was ever done. I want to say it has since I had to replace two injectors but I could be wrong. I remember stand pipes, dummy plugs to name a few.

So, I got the truck back, I guess the IPR sensor (CM-5126-5C3Z-9C968-CA) failed, ICP was ok as it passed it tests. They replaced the bad sensor and she's running again. It's funny how they called that item a fuel regulator or regulator and here I was thinking it was some **** ant sensor not that based on things I read.

Just as an FYI - the IPR is a valve, not a sensor. There is no signal from the IPR that returns to the PCM.

It adjusts the high pressure oil pressure that goes the injectors. I guess you could call it a regulator valve. When it fails, it fails open--leaving no high pressure oil pressure to fire the injectors.

No guessing about it - that is what it is, a pressure regulating valve ......................

page 40 in the 6.0L bible ................

https://www.powerstrokediesel.com/docs/EF_456.pdf

With loss of 12V power it defaults to the 15% commanded position, which is essentially open. That said, it can "stick" in about any position if there is metal in the system (ie doesn't always fail open).

Dang, he got it resolved before I could tell him that it's prolly the IPR valve. My truck did the same thing. Deal is, there's a good chance your valve is fine, that it just got some crud stuck in it so it wouldn't close to build pressure. I'd definitely have gotten the old one back from him. I bet the screen was blown apart.
