Did another camper pull (8,600 lbs) and only saw 14 pai on Torque Pro (MAP). Wondering where to start. I got the truck this last May and had a shop do some of the initial work I didn't feel like doing, like replacing fuel lines to heads. In the process of that, they replaced the up pipes with Dorman. If I would have been in less of a hurry, I would have ordered Riff Raff, which I am doing now
So the question is, what do I do with Turbo? I could have leaky up pipes, but doubt it. Like everything else on this truck, the turbo is probably worn a bit. Do I just take it apart and refresh the wheels with aftermarket (KC makes good stuff) or replace the turbo with a different unit? If replacement turbo, which is a good suggestion?
I put a Hydra on it and thinking maybe down the road of doing stage 1 or 1.5 injectors. But not for a while.
Before ordering the up pipes,
what's your goal?
Towing?
DD?
Race?
or all 3?
Daily driver, with towing (a few times a month).
Going to get some gauges (water, EGT, boost) next. I ran the 65hp time from Hydra pulling the 5th wheel. Cautious. Didn't want to go for the 80hp without watching EGT. It is probably safe, but what to know temps.
Engine is stock, with aftermarket downpipe. No cat. EBPV still intact. Replaced OBOD with Diesel Site boots.
Definitely injectors 160/30s lots of people here like for towing. Kc300x turbo has my vote. Much cheaper than T4 setup and totally rocked my truck especially with injectors. I had a stage 1 I might try the stage 2 next time for some lower egts I think the turbine side is a little bigger. But definitely do your research and find what would best fit what you need. Sometimes T4 just makes more sense for people’s goals if theyd like to change it up down the road

Then go for the t/4, more options in turbos selection but make sure you do your homework on it, as for injectors read, read, read.
I'm happy with my 160/0, modified GTP38 (super duty turbo) and like you I used to tow, DD, and sometimes WOT on the open highway with my truck, more than enough for my intended use, but a t/4 might be in the cards in the future as I may want to buy 5th wheel RV.

Thoughs?

I replaced /upgraded wheels shaft and thrust washers for about 150. been about 175,000 miles and replaced intake boots yesterday, still have no play in shaft and no problem spooling. Upgrade for the thrust washer that has the extra lube hole
Thanks for all the insights, this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Just a nudge in the right direction.
My current thought is to either drop the dough for a KC300x (with new ped), OR just get a KC balanced rebuild kit. Rebuilding the turbo would be a good start, and put the Riff Raff up pipes in at same time.
In regards to the down pipe, it appears I have an aftermarket down pipe of unknown brand. My truck was built in November of 1997, so right near the end of OBS production. Diamond Eye down pipes talk about 1994.5- EARLY 1997. What was the difference in late 1997, and what is a source for down pipe? Or if mine works do I even need one (it is round, not "squished cobra head").
I agreed with Adam above. The 160/0 I have are just right for towing. Before that I had stage II's and it was burning the house down. Granted, even with my 160's I can bottom out my EGT gauges easy but they have all the power I need without getting too hot. I think the only time I got the EGT's way up there was merging onto a freeway. The 160's allow you to get into it longer before you have to back off. My 5er is very heavy, upwards of 17-18K. I have learned from my experience that 160's are the way to go pulling heavy unless you want to drag race!
