Hey guys I have wanted to possibly swap out my turbo for a better one but not sure if I should. My truck is an 01 with 119k on it. Is there usually a time frame that the turbo should be replaced before something happens? And what is normal boost pressure? I run if I romp on it about 10 psi and no higher.
I have to take the turbo out anyway to reseal the pedistal so i figured if I was going to take it out should i just replace it?
Then I would think it is your up pipes are leaking if you are only getting 10psi of boost. Or a weak wastegate actuator. And if you have money to spend then go with the 38r.
Put together a boost leak detector... very easy and cheap... and an invaluable tool.
For up pipes... just look for soot where the up pipes meet up with the collector.
You may also have a bad compressor housing oring...
Look for bolts backing out of the center cartridge that hold the turbine housing on.
Your making boost... so the turbo is functioning... but there is a leak somewhere.
AJ, i'm seeing the same #'s as you. I did the 10k mod, and noticed that i can then, spool up and hit 22psi . I'm thinking my problem may lie with a bad ICP, but i dont have the software to tell me otherwise.
Hey guys today i really got on it and found I'm pushing nearly 14psi also i looked at the up pipes and the both have soot marks on them. When i do replace my up pipes I'm going to buy them from RR but what else should be done at this time so i don't have to r&r the turbo twice? And its it fairly easy to rebuild the ebpv?
Do you need the ebpv? I and many others have just deleted mine (you can go 2 ways, cheap and do the work and plug the hole yourself, or buy an ebpv delete pedestal and housing). The rebuild itself doesnt look too hard to do on them, there are quite a few write-ups and even videos on it.
Sorry about that i worded it wrong. I needn't to say after start up. I'll just stick with rebuilding it and replace the up pipes. thank you guys for all the help!
