What are you getting on average for fuel economy ? Is the onboard system that calculates economy accurate (if you have one) ? My V10 ex on avg is 10.2 (456 gears?) ,the 5.4 ex is 10.6 using math to determine and not sure of gearing (will look today). Both run 285 tires with no engine upgrades.
Read a topic today by JACK19 and he is getting 11.9 with big tire v10. I have never gotten even close to that in 18yrs of owning it. He has a tuner if that helps?? Even with my 17 yr daughter or wife driving it, it gets 10.7 at best. What am i doing wrong or??? Thanks!
The onboard mpg system is often times referred to as the lie-o-meter. Mine is typically about 1-1.5 mpg higher than actual. I average about 12 with my v10. I have 34" tires and 4.30 gears. It's a 25 mile round trip to go to town and back so we don't do a lot of stop and go. 4.56 with 285 tires is a bit on the steep side I think, probably pulls like a train though! Your 5.4 ex more than likely has 4.10s.
I seldom drive my Ex any distance unless I'm towing the boat, but I generally get about 10 MPG or so even when towing. The lie-o-meter consistently shows about .5 MPG more that actual.
Several years ago I filled up at a station in Alabama and reset the statistics. The gauge showed just over 15 MPG on the drive (without the boat). That was an outlier and I've always wondered if a higher octane gas had been delivered to the wrong tank.
Disclaimer: In real life I am a hyper-miler that drives a '94 Geo Metro XFi and I make a game out of continually trying to beat my best mileage in that little gocart, some of that MPG consciousness carries over to when I drive other vehicles where I typically do a little better than the average it seems.
My '05 EX is lifted 4", rolls on 35.25" tires (highway tread), has 4.88 gears (effectively 4.39 ratio), has Banks long tube headers and full flow Y pipe, and always runs 5Stars 89 Octane Performance tune.
My EX is pretty much a dedicated tow rig for our 12,000 lb TT where on all highway trips running at 65/70 MPH it gets 8 to 9 MPG, trips on secondary roads through small towns with stop and go drops it down to around 7 MPG +/- .5. It has seen three 400 mile plus trips at 9.5 MPG and last Sunday it got 9.2 towing home between New Market VA and Media PA running up I-81 to I-76. When our son was going to Ohio State we made several trips out there and back in the EX moving him and his stuff around to dorms and apartments, on those rare long unloaded all highway trips with the cruise set at 65 MPH it got 14.5 MPG. Back when it was all stock with 3.73 gears I used to see 14 MPG on my daily commute which was mostly 55 MPH highway with some in town lights at each end. It's best ever all stock tank was 15.5 MPG and that was with 6 adults onboard touring around costal Maine during a 95 degree heatwave.
My wagon is a low option XLT and does not have the overhead display so all of my mileage calculations are done by hand.
My long-term average is about 16 mpg mixed. I get 18-20mpg freeway, sometimes slightly more than 20 if I keep it below 75, but that is rare. I typically drive 78-83 mph.
I have a 2005 Eddie Bauer Excursion 6.0L 4x4, a 4" lift and 35.6" tires. Plus a full-size spare on the roof.
I'm up to 370,000 miles on the original motor, and mileage has slowly improved over the past 17 years.
Just did a highway trip towing a boat yesterday and tracked actual MPG (by tank and mileage). Boats an old fiberglass 17" about 3000 pounds. It was 200 miles all highway and got 9.6 mpg.. Thats on 315/75/16 tires with 3.73 gears, no tune.
Best i logged on actual MPG was 11.5 which was mostly highway, worst i logged was 8.5 which was lot of city both of which had no towing.. I havent done a straight highway without towing though..
One thing to note is how people get their MPG calculation. First as seen above any computer calculated readings can be disregarded.
Second is the odometer itself. My odometer is off and if this is not calculated in then my readings would be off. The odometer could be off from factory or by tire/gear change. Mine was off due to tires, when odometer said i went 100 miles i actually went 108 miles. Now i calibrated speedo it is better but still off, odometer says 100 miles i actually go 103 miles.
Then you have different slope angles at different gas stations. Its hard to get a solid idea of what someones says is actually taking in all the factor. I always use the same pump and vehicle parked in the same spot to calculated MPG. I disregard the calculation if i use two different pumps.
The best way to tell how far your odometer is off is by GPS. You can get apps with GPS and odometer. Compare how far your rig says you went to what GPS says. This could be your error in calculation...
My lie-o-meter is off more than that! I have a 2003 Ex 6.0. On my last long trip from Ohio to Florida and back it said 21.3 MPG, the best tank I got was 18.6 hand calculated, that's the best tank! Normally it's off between 2.5 and 3 MPG or more. Your V10 Excursions only get that mileage? Damn!!
Just pulled a 1948 Buick Super, from Sacramento CA, to my place in Kentucky. 6.8, 3.73 rear end, stock size tires, little over 2,400 miles. Cruise control set about 62mph the whole way. Hand calculated mileage from dad's drive way to mine. 12.1 mpg. I-80 across to I-29 in eastern Nebraska, then I-29 down to Kansas City, picked up I-70, then picked up I-64 in St Louis. I-64 until the turn south on surface roads to the house.
