Does the 6 volt turn signal need to be on tight to the steering while? My 1949 Ford F3 is positive ground, so does it need to be good and tight to the column for it to work? There was a 5th wire attached to the 4 wire signal switch that I can't figure out why it was there. Unfortunately the wire popped out, so I don't know where it was attached. Could it be possible that it was being used as a ground?

2 things will help, 1) pics and B) colors of the wires.
To answer your first question, no it does not need to be tight to the steering column. Yes, it’s possible that wire is a ground, but we need to know the colors. Also, 5 wires on the switch is unusual, mine has 7. What brand and model switch is it, we can look up the wiring diagram.
