Sean may be the first that I know of, but I don't follow KDD closely. It would take me years before I see them as settled science. But I do wish they were using that casting pattern after the 6.4 modifications with iron heads. It would be a step up from the 20mm heads, although the 20mm heads IMO are an improvement over the 18mm heads - there are just too many people not having as many issues with the 20mm design. There still are, IMO due to tuning, but many with light tunes seem to be fine.
I think they have already tested the heads thoroughly. It would be a big negative for KDD's image if the heads causing issues.
I am still undecided whether to buy the old cast steel heads or the new cast aluminum heads....
I doubt KDD has the money to test the heads "thoroughly."
With all the resources Navistar had, dyno's, and vehicle testing, with Ford somewhat looking over their shoulder, I would say it didn't work well. Most automotive testing is done with "accelerated" test procedures, hours to simulate years. They might be running high power situations, but it does not account for heating and cooling cycles. The same issue of "dyno-tested for a million miles," two years for a single-engine, one year for two engines, four months for six engines. Which is the valid test? I would say none because you don't have the cycles, and you sone have the time aging.
Plus, aluminum heads put higher stress on the head bolts or studs due to the higher thermal expansion—one of the major reasons why TTY long bolts were adopted.
