Considering a purchase

Hi everyone,

I am considering a 2005 F350 with about 240K that has been bulletproofed. I’m new to the world of diesel… wanted to try to get some thoughts on whether this is a good idea. A lot of research has led me to posts that are pretty old so I’m looking for some current advice on the long term reliability. It would be a daily highway driver and then would also occasionally pull a camper.

A truck labeled as "Bulletproofed, doesn't really mean much. You have to do the leg work.

I'd go even further and say that I'd prefer one that hasn't been "bullet-proofed," whatever the seller claims constitutes that term. IMHO, it provides some benefits if you want to run a hot tune AND if it's done by a competent shop, but IMHO, at best 20% of shops are competent enough for that project. Unfortunately, the other 80% have no qualms about taking your money - "bullet-proofing" is a profit center for them; they recommend it for any problem that comes in. All they do is slap studs in and put it back together - for $5000+.

For daily highway driving and an occasional trailer pull, the stock trucks can do that with no problem. Just keep it maintained and don't dog it. Geezus, how many times has some testosterone-fueled terror with a loud exhaust blown by me at 75mph pulling his 35' tin tent, just because he can.

What makes me more skeptical is why someone would spend that money and not drive the truck until it had 400k on it. To me, when someone says, "It was just bullet-proofed 10k miles ago," that's a huge red flag.

There is a sticky thread in the Tech Folder of this forum with a great Buyer's Guide. I'm not saying the truck is bad - it may be great - buy you'll want to check it out thoroughly, especially the EOT/ECT delta under load.
