Anyone figure out a way to get a good 255 lph pump without resorting to a single-tank system yet? It seems Quantum is suffering from a bad run of junk china pumps. I see posts from 10 years ago where their stuff worked great. They must have switched pump suppliers and don't have a handle on the QC currently. I'm in the planning stages of a 521 BBF build for my '94 CCLB F-350. I've already got one dead stock pump so now is the time to get 255s in some how. I'd really rather not lose the spare tire carrier to a 38 gallon bronco tank, and a single 19 gal tank just isn't going to cut it with a 521. So I'm considering taking a stock FDM, cutting a hole in the bottom of the basket, mounting a genuine walbro GSS340 sticking out the hole in the bottom of the basket, and plugging the port that goes to the turbine jet pump. The only concern would be loss of fuel flow due to sloshing at low tank levels with no functional basket. Anyone tried this?
Edit: There are actually 2 different p/n’s available. 12-356 is listed for a short bed. And 12-357 for a long bed. I don’t know why there would be any difference between the two though. Both are 340 lph
I put a pair of quantum 340lph in the canisters, I had to pull the front pump due loss of pressure. The pump was fine but what I found is that the rubber grommet that goes on the pump discharge got pushed down and away from the socket in the FDM. I believe this is what caused it to lose pressure. So I took another grommet, cut it to about half the thickness of the original and seated it behind the original on the pump discharge. I believe with the extra material behind it will keep the thicker grommet in place. If I doesn't rain tomorrow, I'll be putting the 340lph back in and testing it.
