I just replaced the aft fuel pump on my 1988 f250. The previous owner had removed the old pump so I can't compare but the new pump doesn't seem to reach the fuel. I double checked to see if I ordered the right pump and I did. Is it possible I have a oversized tank? There is five gallons in the tank and it reads empty. And when I look thru the vent hole, I can see the fuel screen is barely touching the fuel. Any ideas?
They do make an oversize rear tank, but I think it holds more than 5 gallons and it takes up the spot where the tire hanger used to go. I'm pretty sure its twice the size.
The aftermarket tank mentioned previous typically holds~38 gallons.
FWIW..my old '92 F350 with a 19 gallon rear tank would also register empty with ~5 gallons left. It was annoying. Your fuel pump assembly should reach to the bottom of the tank.
It doesn't pick up fuel from the bottom of the tank because that is where all the junk and debris settles.
Perhaps I should have said close to the bottom. There is no reason why the FDM in the tank now should not be able to draw fuel if it has 5 gallons in it. My old '92 would read empty at ~14 gallons used but I have driven it many times until it ran out of fuel in another 40-50 miles.
Thanks for the replies. it could be a 19 gal. tank and a 15 gal. pump assembly.
Any way I also have a 91 that I will have the bed off shortly for a dumpkit install. When I do I'll pull that pump and compare.
