BROKEN BRAKE LEAKING FLUID PLEASE HELP

I drive a 2000 f250 7.3 4wd and I never mess with the 4wd. It has manual locking and unlocking front hubs. I was in park, put it in 4wd and tried to back out if my parking spot. The truck would move about two or three feet and stop as if the e-brake was activated, if I continued to give it gas it felt like it was going to mess something up BAD. I gave it more gas and I believe that’s where I broke something. I put it back in 2wd, and messed with the hubs and put them back to the unlocked position. From there it was fine but the brake went soft, I had to completely press it down to stop. I parked it and noticed a puddle of break fluid under the tire. Shined a light on the wheel and I saw the brake pad on the bottom portion of the wheel, not completely off, attached to something, but it had to of come out of the caliper. It is currently parked, and actively dripping break fluid. What the hell did I do and how do I fix this?

I was going to just do a whole break job, rotors and pads all around after this but do I need a new caliper? Did a line brake? Any help is MUCH appreciated.

I have not removed the wheel to see what’s going on, it’s dark outside and I have no garage. Please help, thanks!

Most likely, the pad broke, fell out, the caliper over-extended the piston and piston end separated from the rest of the housing causing a massive leak.

Plan on a new caliper for that wheel. Buy extra brake fluid so you have enough to fully flush and bleed the system.

Brake line? Hard to say. Given the age, not a bad idea. Don't think it would have failed or been damaged.

very confusing, you will need to take the wheel off where the brake fluid is leaking and take a look, if a brake pad is wore clear through the lining they can come out of the caliper,

take some pictures and post them

I think you’re right, I was freaking out because I’ve never seen anything like this before. Something happened when I engaged 4wd and it caused something in the brakes to lock up. I will post updates here in a few days

howdy, came across some things. Haven’t began the process of repairs but had to take the wheel off to look it was driving me crazy. What I’m thinking happened is the caliper ejected this bad brake pad! Crazy to think. And from there it leaked out fluid.

First I would the suggest the 4WD was not a factor. The pad is completely gone from the backing plate as you can see, the backing plate looks as if it's been heated, possibly caused by the absence of the pad, this should have been noisy and noticeable though unless it came off just as you were starting to back up. Did you find the pad? If not the pad may have been defective or just got hot from failing to disengage properly, possibly falling off just prior to you parking.

In any case the fluid you see is due to the piston over extending and should be resolved with a pad replacement. As mentioned check the caliper for wear, and the piston for function, if there is no visible damage a pad replacement should be your remedy. I have had this exact same issue, backing out it threw a shoe causing immediate brake fade. My problem was a badly worn brake pad and rotor. My fix was replacing pads and the rotor. Best of luck, hope this helps.

thanks for the response, when the problem happened I remained in a parking spot. I was not able to find chunks of the actual pad anywhere in the event that the pad broke in that instant. Everything is pointing towards the piston fully extending, and I’m just going to go ahead and change the caliper, pads and rotors, and bleed the system. I’ll post updates!
