Torque Pro PID interpretation accuracy

Still working out bugs on my 97. Did some heavier towing (10k 5th wheel) and thought it would pull a little harder. Dug out a bluetooth dongle I used for my Cobra. Got it to read the Ford PIDs. If hose to MAP sensor is solid, does this PID accurately represent boost? Or need to tweak the math?

Any other PIDs anyone has developed that are not listed on the Ford Torque Pro PIDS? I cannot see coolant temp or IAT. Assuming no way to monitor those without a sensor hooked to a gauge. ?

Finally, I have worked through a lot of "deferred maintenance on this truck. 110k miles, so should have a good base. Replaced OBOD. Anything to look for on turbo that would cause lack of boost? I know these don't have a wastegate, but it does have a mechanism similar to the 99 wastegate. Is that the EBPV controller?

Also, does the PHP Hydra give noticeable gains towing on a stock truck with ZF tranny? I noticed a lot of the PHP strategies relate to the auto trans, which leaves me wondering is it worth chipping a stock engine.

Thanks in advance!
Chris

Though mine is an automatic, I'm also curious what the experts say here. [popcorn] I've had a Hydra sitting in my to-do pile for months, and haven't found the time yet.

From personal experience, absolutely yes. Although limited to approx 65 hp gain due to stock injectors, the free Hydra tunes will really wake up your stock truck.

Definitely a hydra or ts chip on a stock truck. Hydra for sure if you want to keep upgrading down the road with injectors and such

Noticable gains? Absolutely. Just don't expect any more than about 40 additional rear wheel horsepower with a stock setup (although 40 additional horsepower is really a big wake-up for these).

The reason there are so many available calibrations for the automatic transmission vehicles is that they benefit most from the tuning - stock shift strategies in the earlier 7.3s really leave a lot to be desired. With a manual transmission vehicle, the only thing to modify is fuel rate....when and where in the accelerator pedal travel.

Hydra— yes you will notice a difference

MAP- what does it show at idle? I am not a PID expert but some show atmospheric pressure at idle so you have to deduct that from your reading to get an accurate boost number. Some show zero so the number is accurate. I don’t know why, and you may be able to change that in a setting, I just don’t know how to do it.

What does yours show?

Thanks for the replies!

MAP in Torque Pro is showing zero (sometimes -0.4), but max is only 11 towing 5th wheel up heavy grade. HPOP only gets to 2,500ish as a max also

Thinking I have other issues. Going to do some more reading

Here is my Torque Pro screen just below 3,000 rpm, pulling about 8,000lbs. Maybe truck is OK, or maybe lacking boost?

The stock calibrations for the 95-97 trucks only call for about 2500 PSI max. Looks good to me.

Make sure you have a SMF conversion. The stock DMF was bad with stock power levels. Best for good power and tow capacity is the Luk kit. We all run 5qt total, filled from the top.

Do not expect all 40rwhp (maybe 80tq) with other 25 year old, worn out components. Maybe your uppipes leak. Maybe plenums do. Far too many variables. Hotter tunes will tax the HPOP more and more often than not, they cannot keep up.

What is the max boost you see at what RPM?

Most of that looks on par for stock settings. I do think your boost is a little low. I data logged one last month that peaked at about 18 empty. Granted we were ‘testing’ the truck to see what it would do. 😁. If 13 is your max, you probably have a leak somewhere.

Already have LUK Single Mass Flywheel. DMF was so bad when I got the truck in May of this year, it would shake the truck terrible at idle.

I checked out the 1/4” tubing running from y pipe to MAF. It was very hard and ends were big. Replaced with new 1/4” vacuum line and it sealed up nice. Took for a short run tonight and was getting about 12psi empty at 3400. Very short hill.

The vacuum pump went bad today. Only pulling 5” at idle, 10” at 3000. Brake light was coming on after application of brakes and pedal would get firm. Fixed that!

May hook on to the trailer and do a little data logging this weekend.

I need to pull the intake piping and check out the compressor side of turbo. Considering a WW2. Worth it or just get a bigger turbo?

looking at injector upgrade. Is 180cc a good start for a few more HP?

Thanks for the replies so far!

I saw 16 or 17psi with stock sticks recently. Check those uppipes and such.

With a ZF, I really dig the 1.0 turbine housing. There is an S300 style turbine wheel available for these trucks now from KC. They have an assembled CHRA with it and billet comp wheel.

Injector is highly debated. 205/30s seem to be new hot ticket. I would do an IC first. OBS solutions has nice brackets to mount a 7.3 SD IC. Piping I have not figured out yet!

Check the latest valve spring craze that is going on here too.

Hit Man, what did you mean by this? It was on the line talking about flywheels.
