I tried to search the threads to see how previous projects got their locked gas cap off with no luck. Does the search work better on a computer vs phone?
The rear tank gas cap is locked and neither key works (most likely siezed). Has anyone removed one without a key and/or damaging the filler tube? Whats the easiest approach?
I would bet someone in the past thought WD40 fixed a sticky lock. Well WD40 is fish oil and when it dries it turns to glue. I would slowly inject a degreaser and work the key back and forth.
If you have body slide hammer with a screw on the end that will be quicker.
Not sure if you have 2 tanks or it's been relocated. (when you say the rear tank.) Most tanks will have a rubber and steel inlet. Take off the clamp off the rubber hose and pull the steel inlet tube off and take it to the bench and work on it there. That way nothing is falling into the tank. You can use graphite as a lubricant, or use the W D and get it off and trash the cap and get a new one.
When I bought my truck two locking gas caps no keys. I called Stant they sent me the keys no charge very helpful. Call them I'm sure they know how to defeat them.
Thank you for all the input! My issue is this truck sat 20yr and the lock/tumbler mechanism is froze up. I used lock ease with graphite first spraying every day. Then I switched to penetrant for a couple days with no rotation.
I will take the filler tube out and take it to the bench to eliminate any debris dropping in the tank. Need to drop the tank anyway and clean/inspect.
I may try the screwdriver method first in the bench vise. I will let you know how it goes for future unfortunate project searches!
