LED headlight bulbs
Just got a new to me Excursion. 2000 4x4 with the V10. My question is if anyone has had any luck replacing the factory headlight bulbs with LED ones. It looks like there is enough room for the cooling fans to clear, but would like to confirm before I order anything.
Thanks.
You will just blind everyone with the LED's and gain no additional range with reflectors compared to halogens. People have done it in reflectors but those people are narcissist.. Don't be a narcissist.
There are halogen choices out there for stock housing.

The factory retainer piece that twists on can make it a tight fit due to the bulb heatsink, i recommend getting the replacement ones here:
Been running them for about 6 months and they work amazing, make a load more light, can see the road a lot better, and they DO increase the visibility distance some.
NOTE: from years of heating up and cooling down the surface on my headlight enclosures was a little bit deformed from the heat, i had to file the teeth on the new retainers EVER SO SLIGHTLY, for them to fit over and twist to the locked in position. took like 1 minute extra per side with a little hand held wood file.
EDIT: the link for the lights i originally posted was the wrong link, i updated it just now to the correct one, i ordered a set for each of my vehicles after the first worked so well, and grabbed the link from the wrong item in my order history the first time.
EDIT2: OK, the second time i posted the link, it got messed up, i just fixed it, it should take you to Stark 9007/HB5 APX Series LED Headlights, damn.
THIS:
First of all, you need an H13 bulb for the stock housing. The H13 has both the high and low beam in a single unit. These are the ones I got ( ), Going on two years now, and I am not blinding anyone. You just need to take the time to adjust them.
When you are going to go and correct someone, make sure you are correct in your statement. The bulbs you just linked to him, are useless to him unless he has a 2005 front end swapped on, or feels like doing one at the same time.
Also, what is Alla LED lighting in your signature, never heard of it?

This is from personal experience. You can use LEDs in reflector housings. What you have to do is find LEDs with a good cutoff pattern. GTR has some LEDs which are very good but they are pricier. I converted my 2015 Explorer(RIP Damn Deer!!) to HID. I experimented with LEDs just to see what they would be like. The ones from GTR had a really nice cutoff line and were almost as bright as the HIDs...but this was in projector housings. When it comes to projector housings, HIDs do better. When it comes to reflector housings LED's do better-so different lighting experts selling HID and LED's tell me. Anyway-a focused cut off gives you better visibility down the road. When they are not confined, they glare everywhere, every oncoming driver hates your guts, and you often can't see as well as you do halogens. In fact, a lot of low beams on bad LED lights are better than their high beam setting.
In cold climates there apparently can be an issue with LEDs not warming the housings enough to keep them from icing over and clouding your light. I've never seen it but some say it happens. There are LED which will recirculate air from the cooling fans back into the housings
If you are looking for bright, the 6000 to 6500K lights are the best. They are in the white range. Higher you get blue which looks cool but is not quite as bright. Lower you are going yellow. I tried 6000K HIDs and sent them back and swapped for the 6500K and thought they were better=for me. Obviously, everyone has different tastes which are easily accommodated in the light market these days.
Before you spend money on headlights-if you have a grill guard or aftermarket bumper, check for interference with the beam. I had a grill guard on the Explorer(a personal testimony that they don't work-not even a little) and it cast a shadow which really cut down the light. If I had know then what I know now, I'd have ripped it off the front end and tossed it in a dumpster. At least I could have enjoyed brighter headlights-for a while.
I plan on going LED myself. If it wasn't bad enough with all the idiot lights taking turns coming on and going off on this X, I discovered a burnt out headlight on the way to work in the freaking dark. I can't remember the last time I've ever had a burned out light. Even a Walmart Halogen is better than no light. Alas I digress. Go forth and spend money-before Biden taxes it away
