Steering Column

Hello everyone, I have a simple question. I removed my manual shifting mechanisms in my steering column because I went to a floor-mounted shifter. Is the shift tube inside the column necessary for any structural reason? I would like to just remove it and have only the steering rod inside the column. I cannot tell if the upper and lower column bearings need the shift tube in place.

Thanks!

Good question. This might help. If you look at the bottom of the page there's a list (legend) of symbols indicating various things for various parts. One symbol is for indicating parts not needed for four speed transmissions - floor shifters, IOW.

You didn't mention manual trans or auto. Three speed manual would still need back up switch movement. Auto would need neutral safety switch/ back up lamps movement.

With a little work you can relocate the reverse light switch on either the transmission or the shift unit. The shift socket can be replaced with a blank one from a 65-70 Mustang or one from a truck that came with a floor shift.
