4 wheel auto???

My 95 explorer has 4 auto and 4 lowon the switch every other 4x I have owned has said 4 high and 4 low. What is the auto mean? Is it a traction control system? Does it work very well?

The auto works is that the power goes to the rear wheels until slippage is detected at which point power is transfered to the front wheels. My 98 has a slightly different which I think they started using in 97. The choices are Auto, 4x4 High and 4x4 Low. With mine, the mode to keep it in for regualr driving is auto which is nice because the traction is always ready for you. I'm pleased with it. I like also having the 4x4 High for deep snow, though.
