Ujoint question

99 f250 super duty. Rear shaft, rear joint. Felt like i had a bad u joint the other day so i crawled under and looked. It appeared that the rear joint was bad as there was slop. I pulled the shaft and the joint was fine. Turns out that the distance between the 2 tabs that locate the joint measures 3.695 compared to the 3.625 of the joint. Is this normal? Seems like a lot of lateral movement to be. Any fixes short of replacing the pinion? I thought about adding a .030 shim inside each of the two caps but not sure how well that would hold up.

Maybe someone replaced the u joint with wrong one? I would take my calipers and go to local parts store and have them pull one you can the width and compare it to yours. It is i the wide width, I would replace the u joint.

Definitely sounds like someone used the wrong joint when it was replaced previously. It was either done by a shadetree mechanic or a shop that didn't know what they were doing.

It's obvious it's a 1350 U joint. I would suspect a U joint failed at one time and wore the retainers the .070 difference. Get a new yoke, they aren't much money in todays dollars.
