Question Keyless entry FOB for 1997 Explorer

Hello All,

Can anyone tell me if a Ford (or otherwise) keyless entry FOB will work on a 1997 Explorer? It did not come with one when I purchased it, but I would like to add one of possible. If so, does anyone know how to program it? I didn't find the programming instructions in the owner's manual.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

Hmmmmmmm

When I bought my 97 used at auction, it came with a key fob. Never has worked and I don't think it works on cars without the keypad on the door that mine doesn't have. Aftermarket security tied into the door locks is probably the best way to go at this point.

Could someone share with me the meaning of FOB?

I fitted keyless entry to my '97. The kit was purchased through an electronics store and is compatible with remote access relay. The existing security system in the vehicle also has the ability to trigger the central locking circuit - although there are not many alarm suppliers/installers who are happy about handing out circuit descriptions. Fitting these things does take some time....door panels off, actuators fitted and adjusted to existing hardware - but the whole exercise wasn't difficult. Cost was about $20US, which did include a full wiring harness. (Had to extend wiring on off-side due to length of runs)

Food for thought?

Paul.

For '95-'97 Explorers, remote keyless entry is part of the package. If you have the password keypad above the driver's door handle, then you should have 2 remotes with it. If you don't have the keypad on the doors, then there're no remotes. I would highly recommend some aftermarket ones. You can get a fairly inexpensive security system for $200 installed while you get a better system than stock.
