fuel issue possibly
once truck cooled down I could restart it till it hit operating temp and sat there for a couple minutes running than stalls.
Attempting to restart shows no gas going to carb, (at fuel filter) but I have spark.
I assumed it was the rear tank pump but I'd think it would restart on the front tank if that was the case. When it does run, it will run on either tank)
Went to check the fuel relay and it isn't there..
So my question is I guess; if you had to direct wire the pumps on a dual tank setup.
Can you do it? How would you do it?
I don't know for sure if that is what they did or Why or if it's even the problem and not ready to rip into the wiring loom yet.
I never had vapor lock issues with this truck before so it could be that but seems odd it would do it on a cooler day or even after 10 minutes of idling.
It does act like it wants to start when I add some gas into the carb trying to get fuel back to it.
I haven't checked the fuel line into the mechanical yet but it's on the list of things to check. It just doesn't seem like
it's the pumps like I initially thought so that is reason I have not..
My next thought was ICM but a ice pack on it didn't change the results and I have spark as I mentioned when it does die.
So my thought is heat related but no fuel relay where it should be located and thats kind of where I'm at.
Maybe someone has bypassed the relay and can offer some insight on how they did it.
Could it be the fuel selector switch?
Also just because you dont see any fuel in the filter dose not mean its a fuel issue as I have seen motors run with empty filters before.
You will need to pop the air filter off and look down the carb, move the throttle and see if fuel will squirt.
If not then you have a non-working fuel pump on the motor.
The other thing you can try when the motor stops is pour a little gas down the carb or spray a little starting fluid and see if it will try to fire off.
If so then you know its a fuel issue.
Also if you want to see if it is a tank / supply line issue get some rubber hose and a small gas can.
Run the hose from the pump on the motor to the can set up on the fender and see if the pump will pump.
Dave ----
should have been more specific. It won't squirt fuel when it is acting up.
I cracked the filter, no fuel pumped out or spewed out when cranking it over. It's basically the same thing as you offered with the gas can/supply line.
And it only does this when it stalls, when it does run, I can flood the top of engine with gas with the filter cracked open.
Like I originally posted; It will fire with pouring fuel into carb and run until it is gone. Still won't squirt fuel into the carb after the stall when it's acting this way.
Runs like it should while it is running, good response etc.
Now I have never dropped the tank so maybe you're right about the pumps but they sell them for my truck and the manual shows them as well as that relay.
Maybe I don't have them factory, seems like I should or maybe the PO eliminated the pump and went with just the mechanical like my 79 truck is set up. I have no clue yet.
My experience with mechanical pumps is they work or they don't but I'm open to being wrong.
Trying to avoid dropping tank for the time until I can possibly narrow it down more.
each and every time.
I'll figure it out I always do.
