MAP sensor, what do you think?

Useful info: so I had my h-pop leak a couple months ago, I didn't have the time to work on it myself so I just took it to the shop. I had a wastegate that I wanted to install as well, I just had them do that as well. Apparently that requires removal of the turbo.

So immediately leaving the shop, (cold truck) there was no power, and a lot of white and black smoke coming from the tailpipe. Well I was getting ready to go back to the shop after looking under the hood, maybe a half mile away from the shop. Put it in drive again, and it was good. I figured maybe it was just a new wastegate thing that the truck needed to warm up. I've repeated this for the last 2 months. I've always given the truck a lot of time to warm up.

Yesterday I pulled my boat out of the water, the truck had been sitting for about 20 hours. I do remember on the toe up that I only really wanted to do about 65 Normal mph, that's what felt comfortable. Normally 70 mph feels really good. But only weighs 4,200 lb.

Kept the truck running while I was prepping the boat for tow. I think that was about 20 minutes. Well I experienced above symptoms. No power, hi EGT, smoke out of the tailpipe. And then code p1247 came on.

Again this problem happened at first when the truck was cold. It lasted for a long time last night then I stopped and had dinner, turn the truck off, and then I want to feel like it's subsided, slightly there's still didn't feel like there was power. The EGT return back to normal almost. If anything it seemed a little low. Still felt gutless, not as much smoke out of the tailpipe.

I was little discouraged until I searched the code, which it looks like it may be as simple as the map sensor. I've never replaced that before. I do remember about 6 months ago hearing some clicking noises coming from the vicinity of the passenger side firewall. With the hood open. I didn't know what that was I was getting ready to post that on this forum but it never really duplicated itself..

Once again thank you for your guys' help. I'm thinking this might be a simple problem. Can you please post part,
number for recommended map sensor? I'm thinking motorcraft again..

Thank you!!!

So, you wanted them to install a wastegate? Was yours a van turbine housing? Or did you just want a different wastegate actuator? Or did you want an EBPV installed coming from a deleted pedestal? Did they unhook and forget to reconnect the EBPV from the pedestal when installing a wastegate turbine housing?

Many questions

The nipple broke off my last wastegate, I brought that to this thread, a lot of people recommended just doing the bypass. I don't have a tuner. All that stuff is stock. I'll admit that I just got a little ****, and just told them to take back the stock and install the wastegate..

I'll see if I can get a look at this ebpv.. That's at the bottom of the turbo right?? That being said though, could that have created this intermittent problem? That finally just got real bad yesterday..

It sounds like you are talking about the wastegate actuator getting replaced, it's on the top driver's side of turbo

Yes the ebpv is below the turbo on passenger side of pedestal.

Yeah, I can see the wastegate, they just replaced it. With a new wastegate. Do you think that something (what I'm dealing with)to do with that install is what's creating this problem? It definitely manifested after they did that work. But again, it only did it when it was cold at the beginning. The last couple of months. I just assumed let the truck warm up really well and it felt fine. According to them, in order to change the wastegate the turbo had to come off. I didn't think that would have been the case. But maybe so, of course they were able to charge the labor accordingly. That's the cost of not having time to dabble with these things. I'm not sure I could attempt a turbo removal and installation anyways..

I'm not sure the terminology being used is correct. I've never heard of the wastegate being replaced. It's inside the turbine housing with the lever arm sticking out. The wastegate actuator is on the driver's side compressor housing above the turbo

If they had it clocked wrong when they attached the actuator to it you could possibly have the wastegate open all the time, or opening way to soon if they set it up wrong. Which could give you your issues.

The ebpv being closed could also be giving you trouble, but it sounds like a jet engine and you'd see high back pressure in the logs

I guess we need a picture of what you are calling the waste gate to get it sorted out

Sorry wes 🤦🏻‍♂️ you were completely correct, I was getting careless in my communication. They replaced the wastegate actuator. The thing that has the nipple with the red hose coming out of it back to that sensor. I don't even know what sensor it's called.

I actually just went out to reposition the boat in the neighborhood. So that I could use the truck later. I didn't get to speeds above 20 mph, but the acceleration feels normal with almost no smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. Some additional information is that I didn't hear the turbo yesterday either. And the truck definitely felt like there was no turbo. Today I could hear it again. So whatever this is is definitely an intermittent problem. I just wiped off the map sensor it definitely looks old. I inspected the hose that comes out of the map sensor back to the other end, I need somebody to hit the gas pedal on it. But I don't feel any leaks coming out of that. Hose looks like it's in good shape..

On my truck I decided the map sensor was working but tired. Plus the previous owner used low Quality sensors around the truck. This one turned out to be Motorcraft so it could have been original. Given how easy it is to change i swapped in a new one knowing there may not be a change. The truck drove better immediately. One of the Pros to diesel is the truck can still run reliably with over 15 problems lol.

Haha.. well right now I'm only running with about nine problems.. lol
The sensor I just wiped off it's got a lot of soot on it. It's a Ford OEM sensor but it does look like it is old. So does the pigtail.

I think I'm just going to replace it, and then see what happens. I don't think it could hurt, it seems like this year is the year of the sensors for me in this truck. Sensors in the last year, might as well just replace this map sensor.

CX-1679
Is that the part number you used? I will definitely be going motorcraft..
