i have just broken off the stud that connects the exhaust manifold to the pipe.can i drill it out and use an easy out or is the stud reverse thread .i know this is probably a stupid question but i just don't know
Removing those studs when they break off is some of the NASTIEST of nasty jobs.
. . of course, I'll bet you are verrrry well aware of that.
If you have sufficient mobility left in your hands after that job to be able to type, you must be a pretty good mechanic!!
. . mine are usually wrapped in bandages for days
No. I would recommend heating JUST the stud . . if possible.
The idea being to "swell" the stud and then let it contract back to *about* normal size (thus breaking the rust bond).
Heating the manifold - effectively - would take so much heat/time that the stud would heat up also, leaving you right where you started out . . but with big parts too hot to touch.
I just went thru this myself, broke 3 of the 4 manifold to pipe studs. I tried all the suggestions I could find in these forums including the vaunted "candle trick" but nothing worked. I ended up just drilling out 2 of the studs where they went all the way thru the manifold and used a longer bolt and nut to secure the pipes. For the 3rd stud that did not go all the way thru I just drilled the stud and tapped for 5/16" bolt. I wasted a lot of time and some money trying to remove the studs, I should have just drilled them out in the beginning.
