so I got to thinking (dangerous i know) and was thinking the wheel studs on my truck and kinda small and it would be nice to swap them out to some larger diameter studs. anybody know if there are some wheel studs that have a larger diameter threaded area that fit in the same holes as the original?
Dorman 610-278 are the 9/16 studs I used for the front dana 60 on my highboy. I have a 14 bolt rear and used dorman 610-228. They are also a bit longer then fa tory so the lug nuts have more to grab.
You will likely have to drill the hubs, rotors, and rims to make this work; this will weaken the integrity of all these components.
Are you breaking studs? I would start with new replacements of the same size first. If they aren't breaking then this is fixing something that's not broken. If they are breaking you might as well consider upgraded axles.
Not breaking and I have all Brad new studs on the front. I just know at some point I'm going to end up putting a fairly stout cummins in the truck and was trying to hedge my bets a little
It's good to think ahead but you have plenty of other stuff to worry about before this. Read up on some of the Cummins swap threads to get a better idea of what.
Been reading a bunch for months now trying to track down as many gremlins ahead of time as possible. I have the majority of my plan figured but I learn new things or have new ideas everyday so I'm sure the plan will keep evolving until I get the donor truck and start work on the swap, until then it's planning and getting other systems up to par in anticipation of cummins power
The cummins studs on the newer 6.7's are essentially the same size as what you have on your truck, and those are putting down over 800 ft/lbs. Not trying to be a jerk, but if you look at the shear strength of a single 1/2 grade 8 bolt, then multiply that by 8, you have a lot of potential strength there.
the new dodges use much larger studs in regards to the threaded portion
1974 ford f250 4x4 stud threads 1/2x20
1996 dodge 2500 4x4 stud threads 9/16x18
2014 ram 2500 4x4 stud threads 14x1.5mm
some of the other newer trucks even come with 5/8 studs at the threaded part
