Undercoat

Hello everyone earlier today I posted a thread about undercoating your vehicle and did some research today and I think I found the best stuff for your trucks or car especially our favorite dentsides if you want to. This stuff is military grade too. Its called RP 342 or cosmoline and Im sure you guys have heard of it but it is a wax that it is in a rattle can that you spray on the the salt snow dirt and rain will not take it of going to buy some.

I can say I have gotten some old WWII vintage weapons (M1 Carbine, Garand) dipped in the stuff... Hope ya never want to remove it! LOL, it's gonna be on there for a LONG time. I would think with the modern rubberized coatings available today there are some other options? Less messy anyways...

Keep in mind the cosmoline based stuff is never gonna be in a state that isn't "greasy". Every time you go under there it's gonna be greasy and messy and probably collect just a ton of dust/ road grime.

Just my opinion... Have a link to the stuff? Maybe it hardens a bit or is something else I am unfamiliar with...

Yes i was going to mabye do the rubberized coating but the problem with that is after a while ut dries cracks and peels and the moisture gets gets under it and rusts more. And actually by doing research you can risnse the eoad dirt off and it does dry its just a luttle tacky like wax. I would spray my entire truck with it I would kill the little surface rust in some place then spray that over it.

There's quite a few very similar products out there. Waxwool, Fluid Film, NHOU, just to name a couple. I'd be looking for something with rust converters/neutralizers in the formula, usually phosphoric acid but some brands use other chemicals. Depending on where you live they can be used as a stand alone product, or part of a prevention system. Up here in road salt country, I strip all the rust, use a rust converter (Rustoleum rust stop in spray bomb is easy and works well, IMO) epoxy prime, paint, then i use a smooth chip guard or bed liner product, then i treat with wax undercoating, I like Fluid Film. The more layers of paint/primer/etc. you have, as long as they were applied correctly, the more protection you'll have. Textured coatings are the worst, all the little crinkles and crevices hold dirt and salt that'll be waiting to get into any defect in the coating and start causing corrosion. The heavier rubberized coatings can also fill holes in body panels that are meant for drainage and actually cause worse rot.

Yes I agree I hate the Zibart rubberized under coating with that thick stuff the covers holes traps moisture and makes everything worse. Know my 75 f250 was undercoated I think when it was new but I think they had a much better process back the because its just a light coating and they did not spray the frame on mine. And I don't plan on driving my 75 in the winter so no road salt to worry about. Also I plan on using that loctite jelly rust disolver first then the cosmoline.

I just did an undercoating on the bottom of my cab. I used a 3M rubberized undercoating. Before I sprayed it on I spent a considerable amount of time pressure washing and taking it down to mostly bare metal. Using sand paper, DA, wire wheels, stripper disks and various grinders, it was a long process . Then I sprayed a 2 part epoxy prime. Then used Seam sealer anywhere I could find that needed it. I certainly hope it will hold up over time.

The guy certainly doesn't need my help with body work. He's doing a bang up job (pun intended). Will give him an opinion on paint if he likes though.

Someone already mentioned it, but I’m going with fluid film. I did two coats of primer and a paint from Napa.

Once everything is put together I’ll be spraying the fluid film every two years (I think).

But I think as long as you have a good coating of whatever you put on, it’ll be better than nothing
