Undercoating

Does anyone have any opinions on undercoating trucks and what the best to use. Don't plan on doing it right know to my 1974 ford f250 because I am not driving it in the winter. Did some research and found out that the hard undercoating like Ziebar is not good because it hardens and rusts and found out the best is the oil based spray. I also heard they used to spray the trucks in the 70s with a oil based spray but was outlawed. So I was thinking I ran across a 1974 ford f350 super camper special about 8 months ago and didn't buy it but it was undercoated I think when it was bought new. But it wasn't a hard spray it was a little plyable and messy. And by the front frame by the motor it was really messy because of the engine heat. SO my question also is would that be a oil based coating they sprayed on it?

I don't care for the rubber spray on undercoatings unless high quality primer was used under them.

I plan on spraying rust converter on the bottom of mine and then use fluid film. The rust converter is just because I have a lot of surface rust. Doing the fluid film every few years should really extend the life of a truck.

I think that sticky type was an oil/wax mix that seemed popular in the day. Whether or not it was legal when the transmission front seal blew on my truck with E4OD nothing rusted aft of it. Nor the RV that I was towing.

I purchased my 1976 F350 Supercab 460/C6 in March of 1976. I had it "Ziebarted" two weeks later. I had the complete rust proof treatment--undercoat, inside door panels, inside pillars, etc. I have the little yellow Ziebart plugs scattered throughout the interior of the truck. These plugs cover the access holes they drilled to reach inside with their anti-rust spray. I am happy to report my truck is rust free--top, bottom and throughout the cab and bed. I have no idea what a Ziebart treatment like this costs today, but I remember it was pretty pricey in 1976.

Yes was going to do that on my but mine has a thin layer of the hardened undercoat I think from when it was bought new in 1975 I think someone had it undercaoted.

Edit: reread initial post.

I would say leave it if it is soft. Maybe scrap a few spots to see if rust if forming under it.

Don’t know how it works if your frame isn’t coated with some sort of paint, but I’ve heard great things about Fluid film.

Website here

I did two coats of primer and then a top coat of Paint from Napa, stuff is really nice. Planning to put fluid film on the whole underbody once it’s put back together.

I know someone with a dent who reapplies it every two years, has had the truck for a while now, and it has yet to rust at all. We are in northern NJ so that says a lot about a product haha.
