How’d the conversion to the van turbo go? I have one in my super duty. I don’t really have anything to compare it to as I came from a worn out engine and turbo and put a good engine and rebuilt the van turbo and installed them in my truck. I know I don’t have to worry about egts much unless I’m pulling heavy stuff. I make about 23-24psi. I wish I had put the balanced assembly in when I had it all apart before to get the benefits of the better turbine. It does take a second to spool but once it does it does good.
It’s not done yet. I ordered the KC balanced assembly and rebuild kit and an EBPV pedestal. I’m also rebuilding the fuel bowl. I’m debating on adding a 4 line fuel setup while everything is apart. Then I still need to finish the rest of the truck. I’m trying to decide what to coat the frame with. If I get it blasted or just use a rust treatment or dipped or coated. It’s a long project.
Ah ok. I wish I could strip my truck down and coat the frame. Shouldn't be too hard to put all that engine stuff together though. While you have it apart you should delete the filters in the tank to. That helps a lot and if you put a filter outside the tank you won't ever have to drop the tank again.
I have an 08 tank I’m trying to fit up to it. No filters, but the shower head is all broken up. I need to replace it with something else.
oh ok nice. I’m sure you could do a tube extension similar to the hutch and harpoon mod then. I would put some kind of filter between the tank and pump though.
I uploaded these in my build thread, but will add them here as well. The KC unit went together well. Just waiting on new pedestal bolts to arrive (Diesel O-rings sent the wrong ones). Everything from KC was great. And now all I need to finish the performance upgrade is injectors and a tuner. For the KC rebuild kit, order a separate compressor outlet oring. The one in the kit is too skinny.
I don't remember them including the compressor outlet o-ring in the rebuild kits. I think that extra one might be for something else. I had to buy that separate also.
Yes, you can use a L99-03 van turbo, pedestal and up-pipes for those years. You may need to change one of the exhaust manifolds. You’ll also need an intake plenum ‘y’ pipe (for van) and intake plenums from the newer engines. Clearance to the cowl gets TIGHT on OBS trucks with late SD turbo. Not sure how the stock downpipe will fit, but you 100% will need firewall clearancing to accommodate any other downpipe. The stock downpipe leaves a lot to be desired....
I’m going to agree with cleatus and say this is likely a flawed plan, but we’ll see what you learn.
The van turbo is not ‘200* cooler’ than a SD turbo with all things being equal. The 1.15 AR exhaust housing absolutely spools slower than a tighter 1.0 or .84 housing, bringing boost on at higher RPM’s. In most situations, this delayed boost will generate higher EGT’s.
Ive used the van turbo on quite a few builds. The 1.15 ex housing greatly reduces the drive pressure to boost delta and allows us to run bigger injectors and hot tunes without beating up the turbo as bad. I have 500hp trucks running this turbo for many years now.
All of that said, the KC S300 style wheel (the bigger one made for van turbo) and compressor wheel with extended tips changes the game. I expect this setup to spool closer to a stock SD turbo and likely accomplish your goal of reducing EGT over the stock OBS (1.15 AR ex housing) turbo.
Looks great and thanks for sharing your build. Can’t wait to hear your results.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the van turbo. I’ve got it bolted to the L99 engine I’m using. I’m using bellowed up pipes from Rudy’s and a van spyder from eBay. I also deleted the intake air heater so there’s more flow than stock. I’ll post the results once it’s all together and running. May be a year or two. I still need to blast and paint the frame and suspension.
