When you pulled the axle did the outer race of the old bearing come with it?
It looks like the new bearing has the outer race on it yes?
Or was the old bearing non-sealed and the new bearing sealed?
If you measure the outside of the new bearing and then the axle housing it should tell you if you need to remove that part that is in the housing.

I bet he had a tapered roller bearing setup like my 1980 had. It looks like a front wheel bearing and the bearing with the rollers is pressed on the axle, and the outer race is stuck in the housing, just like the front wheel bearings. Pull the race out of there. You have the all in one bearing on it now, so you do not need that race in the housing.
You guys are both right. My original was tapered like the one you showed. I purchased bearing A20 which is sealed of course. The old race is still in there. Iwanted to be sure to take it out since it wouldn’t fit.
last question, is there a specific way to mount the bearing on the axle? One side facing in or out. Didn’t think of this until I saw your pictures.
I don't remember about the new bearing. If it is sealed on both sides, I suppose it won't matter. If it's only sealed on one side, then the unsealed side would go toward the center of the axle. I seem to remember it was sealed on both sides though correct?
