Got the rest of my parts to finish the 9" today and this goes and happens. The first axle bearing came off without a hitch but the second wouldn't budge, It even bent the bolts a little on my not so great(apparently) bearing tool. So i had to cut it off and......Well i goofed.
Funny thing is I've done it this way a bunch of times and never hit the axle.
there is no actual friction on that part of the axle and you probably only hit a couple thousandths, would anybody know if a file on that area and pressing on a new bearing would be ok?
It's been one of those days where Murphy's law was in abundance, It started when i broke my torch glasses and had to use sunglasses. The seal area is OK and it should dress up alright, The bearing and ring will cover up the Pitts but it just bugs me it happened.

Hey look at it this way, if it can't be fixed you finally have that axle you've always wanted to built that Front Yard thingaflobby with all the flashies.

I wholly agree, I have seen many worse and done exactly as above. No foul. Even the seal area can be repaired. In working with large rotating machery, some shaft were either welded or sent out for flame spray ( depending on the hardness of the metal) and then machined back to spec and then emery clothed on a lathe. Your goof is light weight stuff, so don't beat yourself up over it. I have seen "pro's" do worse.

Ya know your not far off there. Told the wife i was going weld two old crankshafts together for a mailbox post since ours keeps getting beat up, Well it didn't go over to well.
I did heat it initially GW but to no avail so i had to torch it off.
i'm gonna mount the mail box to the front bumper pf the 49 seeing as i refer to it as my new lawn ornament anyways. then it will serve a useful purpse in her eyes and she can stop whining about me and my " stuff " . yeah right lol . like they said i too have seen worse by people who are pro's and do it for a living , it's no biggie . but like you too i get so p.o'd when i goof up as i know i'm better . it helps to be able to come here and vent as everyone here can put it back in perspective and i realize i'm upset over nothing . dare i say this that's what freinds are for ?
no gravel cement make it hurt !!! grand mother used to have a dance studio at the end of the road from her . people would go through there like a bad out of hades and not look . there was always lilones there so one day after an incident where her mail box and fence was taken down by one of 'em who kept goin i took a 4 inch pipe filled it with 'crete buried that sucker dain near 4 foot in the ground put her mail box on it put the fence back up . a week later one of 'em hit it again , you know they couldn't drive away this time .. oh and i also backed out in front of one who was really bad about flying through there after she dropped her kid off , with one of the old bomber race cars , slammed me right in the right door and fender . needless to say her berretta wasn't going any where i pulled the race car back into the drive on the trailer like i was supposedley doing and she got a ticket for speeding ,failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident , and something else . the officer was a freind whom my grandparents had called many times and complained too and he had seen these peoples stupidty first hand .
Next time use a cold chisel rather than a flame axe. The races are hardened and will crack if hit with a CC.
Thats true, Although the torch did double duty yesterday in warming up the shop.
Since the wife wasn't thrilled about the crankshaft idea i ended up puttin a 6' steel pipe 4" round in the ground and made a steel plate cover for the mail box. It turned out real good and the goobers playing mail box baseball will regret it if they hit this one.
