Trailer disconnected icon

New 2020 truck with a new 2021 car hauler.
lately I’ve been getting the “trailer disconnected” display on the dash while going down the road. Sometimes it happens others it’s fine.

today when it happened I pulled over. I confirmed All the lights on the trailer worked, brakes, turn, running etc, but the icon was still there. Wiggled the trailer plug and everything was gtg. Few miles later same thing. This time I lost trailer brakes, but all lights were working.
is my plug bad? Something else?

Usually when that happens it is a ground issue.
Try tightening up the plug contacts so they fit together tighter.

Look under the rear of the truck behind the bumper and near the spare tire. There's a few connectors there that can get moisture in them and/or corrode and raise all sorts of havoc. Dismantle every connector you can find, clean and put some dielectric grease in there. Solves all sorts of issues.

When my new truck gets here greasing those connectors will be done the first week I have it, I have heard so much about the trouble they can cause.

if it’s a ground issue, why would the lights on the trailer work?

I’ll take a peek tomorrow. I’m do for a oil change. Is this something the dealer will do or is it up to me to grease everything up? Truck only has 5k miles

sorry for my ignorance. Where in the connector do I apply the grease? I just read in a few different sites “shouldn't be applied directly to the mating surfaces (pins and sockets) of an electrical connection”

Since dielectric grease is a silicone grease, it should not be used on silicone-based rubbers or plastics, as it will break them down over time. The grease does not conduct electricity, so it shouldn't be applied directly to the mating surfaces (pins and sockets) of an electrical connection.May 24, 2020“

Because the trailer is grounding through the hitch. Separate the truck and trailer and just use the 7 pin for testing.
