So, if any of you were following my other post about 2001 injector knock or ?? I can tell you that the engine no longer runs. Well it does run, nut not well at all. #8 had the knock and on a 600 mile round trip I lost one of the front 2 cylinders. Not sure which yet since the truck is still 300 miles from home. Definite loud noise in front of engine vs the rear and oil pushing out dipstick tube. Oh, and the missing water in the tank may indicate an issue too. haha Anyway, a friend of mine has a low milage 96 engine I am sure I can get a good deal on but wanted to make sure it would work. In my brief search I found they are basically the same. In a nutshell, should I swap out the 01 with the 96? Is there a thread I missed on what needs to be done.? Thanks everyone for your help with this truck on past, present and future issues.
I'm thinking that some of the differences would be: Front cover, oil intake, intake plenums and number of bolts holding them down, possible mechanical fuel pump on the older unit. Someone else will know better.
I would say that with oil flying out of the dipstick tube and the water bottle dry that at least one cylinder will have zero compression. Engine has 520k on it. I do have the right parts to check though once I get the truck back from 300 miles away. I build race engines and all the signs point to burned/broken rings and/or piston. The water missing leads me to believe a piston broke and the pieces wiped out and injector and the matching cup. After I stopped there was water in at least 1 cylinder locking it up. I did bump it slowly knowing that could very well be the case when I tried to restart it. I cleared the cylinder of fluids slowly then it started. It's broken for sure.
Just use the long block from the 96 the only mod you will need to do to the 96 block is cover the fuel pump hole on the engine valley.
Is that something I need to fab or is there a block off plate available? I have full access to a custom metal shop, but just buying something sounds easier. Thanks

I can get the 96 (160K) engine for the same or less than me rebuilding mine if it is salvageable. I may be able to get a 2001 F450 complete with low miles (150k) too, but that will cost more than the 96.
Running a 95 in my E99 SD, works as it should. Just strip the 96 down to the long block like previously stated and bolt all your 01 parts on. You can technically mix and match a lot but I wouldn't recommend it, you could end up chasing problems caused by Frankenmotor.
