This is what I did after I got the distributor on the correct tooth / oil pump shaft orientation
1. Use a straight edge to mark outside of distributor with center of #1 cylinder terminal
2. Remove distributor cap, carefully trace/transfer that line to the inside
3. Remove #1 cylinder spark plug (passenger side front), rotate crank until on compression stroke blocking off spark plug hole with finger to feel, shine light into cylinder and use a screwdriver or other proper tool to find TDC, check timing mark on pulley to see if they correspond (if you know your timing marks are accurate you can skip that step)
4. Rotate crank to align timing mark at 10* BTDC
5. Loosen distributor hold down bolt (mine took a 1/2" ratcheting wrench)
6. Rotate distributor to align left leading edge of rotor with Sharpie mark you made earlier on distributor
7. Tighten and reinstall everything
I want to double check that this is correct I have never set my timing before on any motor. I am specifically wondering about step 6 and if I should align the rotor with the left leading edge or center of rotor contact
If I did anything else wrong please let me know marking the distributor with a sharpie and straight edge on post #1 aligning left leading edge of rotor with mark
Sounds fine for startup, the first time I put an engine together and timed it, I didn't go nearly in depth as you. Fired up the engine, timed it by ear, then put a timing light on it. Happened to be perfect.
Your probably going to be out +-5 degrees anyways, you still need a timing light and time it running.
If you had points, you would rotate the distributor to where the points just opened up. But since you have magnetic pickup, you would rotate the distributor until one of those trigger fingers gets close to the pickup. How close? Don't know, as I've never tried to measure the magnetic pulses to try to correlate when the amplifier picks it up. You can probably get it close enough to start the engine, but you will still need a timing light to fine tune it.
Going to time the motor. Truck has no tach. Should I set initial or total? I’m gonna plug the vac advance port on the distributor and the carb side (this is what I read to do).
You want the engine at idle so the centrifugal advance will not come into play, and the vacuum ports plugged so that won't advance the timing either. Then you set the initial advance by the distributor clocking.
