So I had to remove the distributor to check and see if the oil galley plugs were installed. After I had it out, i moved the engine around getting the harmonic balancer off and now got it all together and cant get the thing to fire.
I never can get the dist installed the first time so I was wondering if someone could go over how they do it. See if maybe Im missing something, or dont know some little trick to it.
Feel kinda stupid asking since its so simple, but Im obviously missing something
I'd do the 50/50. Line the timing mark up to zero or 10* BTDC and then get the rotor pointing at the NO. 1 plug wire terminal on the distributor cap. If it doesn't start then line the timing marks back up and turn the rotor 180*.
First bring #1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke(crank timing mark should also be at 0) and then install the distributor so the pointer ends up at the #1 post on the cap. Leave the dizzy just loose enough so that it can turn and crank the motor, if it doesn't fire right away advance the distributor by turning it clockwise. Then after you get the motor running put a timing light on it and set the base timing to spec.

Thats exactly what I do, but cant ever seem to get it without taking it out and re-installing it 5 or 6 times.
Anyway to tell for sure if #1 is on TDC?
I usually have a straw that I put in the #1 spark plug hole and when it gets pushed out all the way I line up the timing marks. The last time I did it today I rotated it over several times and when it was the easiest to turn (no compression because no spark plug) adn the straw pushed all the way out, timing mark lined up. Put the dist in with the rotor pointed at #1. Still wont even sputter.
As you rotate the engine put a thumb over the plug hole and you'll know you're on the compression stroke when there is air being pushed past your thumb. Then just use a piece of straw or small wire to feel for exact TDC. And as stated leave the distributor loose so it can be turned while the engine is cranking, if you find you really have to twist it around to get any lightoff then it's off a tooth so pull it out and restab it 1 tooth back.
