Have a 1973 F3 50 super cab or three 60 in.³ replaced timing gears and roller chain at top dead center on number one cylinder. Truck still wants to time at 25 to 30° retarded. Not me the truck. LOL! Wondering if there could've been a problem between cam to crank ratio in regards chain placement. Will resetting the distributor have any affect on this issue? Thank you gentlemen. By the way how's the new Delco electronic distributor coil over cap Installed.
I would remove your timing cover one more time and ensure the timing set is installed correctly.
Then set the distributor so the rotor is pointing at the #1 cylinder when set in place. Then try to time the engine that way. It sounds like you did it this way but you didn't really say that you took a straight edge and verified the timing marks were in line with the cam and crank.
If that's the case and you're still having issues. Remove the spark plugs. Put a compression tester in the #1 plug hole and manually turn the engine over until you have compression in the #1 cylinder. Remove the plug and take a screwdriver or something and put it in the hole. Turn the engine over (forward and back) to identify TDC. Install the distributor so its pointing to the #1 plug. How do make it point to the #1 plug: put the rotor on. There are alignment slots on the rotor which make itonly go on one way. Identify what plug wire will be #1. Draw a line (cap on the distributor) with sharpie from the cap to the distributor. Then align the rotor to that line.
