We just purchased a 1964 F100. The brake backing plate/dust cover is worn out. I have not been successful in finding a source for new or replacement plates on the internet. Does anyone have suggestions for a source for these.
I am actually thinking about doing the conversion to discs on the front, so I'm more interested in the rear plates. Crop Duster, thank you for the suggestion on welding the worn spots. I've also picked up from reading some threads that there may be a possibility to replace them with the plates from a different year and/or model including some cars. Any suggestions on that?
I would take the old plate and find a good junkyard and start looking at anything with a 9" axle, {if thats what you have} Galaxies Torinos, etc. If that fails, I'd check with some of the 9" specialty shops, like Currie. Good look!!
Get backing plates, drums and axles from a 68-72. That way you could upgrade to the wider rear brake shoes.
This is what I did in my 63.
If you did your spline engagement in the side gears is way less than it should be. The 68-72 axle housing is narrower than the 61-66 and the bearing seat on the axle is in a different location. When Ford went to the bigger brakes they changed a lot more than just backing plates, brake drums and axles. All those little changes were to center the shoes in the drum and maintain the same track width.

It’s plenty. The bearing offset between the two axles is about 1/4”.
I have a complete 9" housing with backing plates and axles out of a 73. The housing is 2" wider so that equates to 1" per side. The housing and backing plates are powder coated gloss black. I have never used them.
