I have in Marti report that my 73 F100 came with white sidewall tires. Now she hasn’t and I wanted to put those kind of tires again, but don’t know which ones were the correct ones, I mean, how wide the whitewall has to be.? 3-1/8”, 2”, less..? What were the original tires when the truck went out of the line.?
More than likely 3/4” whitewall, but I’m sure there is someone on here that will have a more definitive answer. I can remember as a kid these trucks coming with 3/4” white wall. Which the rear would be pulled immediately and replaced with a large grip spur from the local Co-Op farm store. It was quite common to keep these rear takeoffs stacked around the shop to use as replacements/spares for the front or on cotton/hay trailers. Hope this helps and good luck on your search.
Looks about right as I recall them then, looks like what we just called "narrow white walls". Very popular they were then. 3/4" ..... sounds right. Soon there were pencil thin white, red, even gold walls. Dad and most neighbors seemed to like the"NWW" look , those wide "old timey white walls" were often just a extra flap like sidewall cover that were a PITA as they were pinched between tire bead and rim of the "pre-letter" size tires or "ballon tires" that often had tubes still ... and often were seen laying roadside. .
Take a look at the Ford sales brochures for the F series for 1973. They will give you a good idea of what they were at the time. If you don't have one, look on eBay.
Last set of tires I put on our 88 TC had an LR78 I believe was about 3/4" ww. Had a heck of time finding local. Found them in Michelins lineup. That had to be 10 yrs ago.
