What's the diff?

How can I tell what type of differential my 89 e350 has? According to my Haynes manual, there are three possibilities.
  1. Dana and Ford (non-locking)
  2. Dana (limited slip)
  3. Ford (Traction-Lok)
It says the Dana needs a friction modifier (?) . It also says the Dana doesn't have a drain plug .
Am I correct in assuming I have a Dana if there is no drain plug?

I've never had to take a cover off before to drain a diff. Any advice would be appreciated. Are the gaskets easy to find? And do I need to determine which one I have before I order one? And what about this friction modifier?

member WellKnownHermit just posted a list of axle codes here:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post19994649

Look on the drivers door for the sticker and look for Axle code then match it to the list. Also there should be a metal tag somewhere on one of the differential cover bolts.

Thanks annaleigh. My code is 53 which is not in that list but a quick Google found that it's a Dana 70 HD with a 4.56 ratio.

You need to take the cover off to drain it. The plug is for filling it. Take the cover with you to get the correct gasket,or buy a couple different ones and return the ones you dont use. I dont use a gasket.I use RTV/silicone made for the purpose. Ask the parts man. Make sure the surfaces are CLEAN. I use lacquer thinner to clean both gasket surfaces.Only Ltd slip/posi units need friction modifier. if it hasnt been changed before, you will probably be surprised at what the old fluid looks like. But good quality grease.

You are welcome!

Here is some more information from FTE's parts specialist and retired Ford parts manager NumberDummy

"The AXLE code on the Certificaton Label is 53 but...in the Ford truck parts catalog, this refers to two different Dana 70's.

53: 1980/85 Dana 70 H/D / 4.56-1 / No Limited Slip / 7,400 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.

53: 1983/89 Dana 70 or Dana 70U / 3.54-1 / No Limited Slip / 7,400 or 7,800 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.

Beginning in 1959: IF the AXLE code begins with a letter: Limited Slip / If with a number: No Limited Slip."
